Prêté à Rosenborg, Chiakha aurait convaincu ses dirigeants au fil des semaines grâce à ses performances remarquées. Son efficacité devant le but a notamment accéléré la décision de la direction norvégienne, désormais déterminée à conserver le joueur sur le long terme. Si l’opération se confirme, l’attaquant devrait parapher un contrat courant jusqu’à l’été 2031, preuve de la confiance placée en lui par son futur club.

Sept buts en six matches

Le choix de Rosenborg de passer rapidement à l’action s’explique surtout par la forme étincelante affichée récemment par Chiakha. L’attaquant algérien a inscrit sept buts lors de ses six dernières rencontres, une série particulièrement impressionnante qui n’a pas laissé indifférents les responsables du club. Une efficacité qui a fini par convaincre Rosenborg de lever l’option prévue dans l’accord de prêt. If selected, the world’s best and SA Rugby Player of the Year Malcolm Marx knows he and the Springboks have a job to do defending Ellis Park against the All Blacks on Saturday.

One of the world’s leading hookers renowned for his powerful ball-carrying and turnover prowess, the two-time World Cup winner expects an explosive showdown in the opening clash of the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series.

The 32-year-old on Tuesday was asked if the Joburg venue is still a Bok fortress, given that the Wallabies stunned the world champs there last year, after the All Blacks did the same in 2022.

“I think the whole of South Africa is our fortress, to be honest. It doesn’t matter where we play or who we’re playing against,” he said.

“We know we’re not just representing ourselves. We’ve got 64, 65 million people that we’re trying to represent, and we want to represent them the best we can on the day.”

According to the front-row juggernaut, previous success at scrum time will offer the Boks no comfort against an All Blacks pack determined to challenge them.

“We know the All Blacks will obviously come after us at the scrum. We can’t rely on what’s happened in the past to take us through this game,” Marx said.

The breakdown will be another key battle, although Marx was giving little away about the Boks’ plans: “I don’t think I’ll tell you how we’ll try and stay on top of it! [Laughs]

“We’re doing a lot of analysis and seeing where we can be better, and the threats they bring in that aspect of the game. We’ll see how the weekend goes if I’m selected.”

There will be no excuses around the altitude or conditions, with Marx insisting both teams have had enough time to prepare.

“Everything’s the same for both sides. Whatever the occasion is and whatever comes on Saturday, we’ve just got to man up and give the best we can on the day.”

On facing New Zealand rivals like Codie Taylor, Marx said he has plenty of respect for them.

“He’s a great player. We have a laugh and a beer after the game, but we both know that on the day we’ve both got a job to do.

“All explosive players, very explosive. Good with ball in hand, good in defence and obviously great at set-piece.”

And when the haka begins on Saturday, Marx’s focus will not be on matching the emotion but on what comes next.

“Respect it firstly,” he noted. “Think about your first job at hand after the haka is done.

“I do look at one specific player – I think you can probably guess who it is …”

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has confirmed that it will televise the highly anticipated Test match between the Springboks and the All Blacks.

However, the announcement has left many rugby fans frustrated after it emerged that the public broadcaster will only show the match on a delayed basis.

The clash between two of the world’s best rugby teams is scheduled to take place at Ellis Park Stadium, with kick-off set for 17:10.

SABC has scheduled its broadcast for 19:00, almost two hours after the match begins. By the time the game airs, the final result is likely to be known, meaning fans who want to watch the match live will have to find an alternative way to follow it.

Many supporters were initially excited by the prospect of watching the Springboks on SABC, only to express their disappointment after noticing that the match would not be shown live.

The public broadcaster has once again faced criticism from fans over its failure to secure the rights to broadcast one of the biggest fixtures on the rugby calendar live.

SABC disappoint Springboks fans once again

One fan, @Zavosdd, wrote: “This delayed live match is a slap in the face. You would have to lock yourself in the soundproof room from 5pm!”

@tlenaba added: “Repeat of a 17:00 match.. You are disrespecting lena Ko SABC, you don’t take people seriously. Nonsense!”

Another frustrated supporter, @DorrienVenable, wrote: “You can’t even afford to show the match of the national side being played live, its time to just shut down SABC completely.”

With the Springboks and All Blacks set to renew one of rugby’s fiercest rivalries, fans had hoped the SABC would make the blockbuster encounter available live to a wider South African audience.

Instead, the delayed broadcast has sparked another wave of criticism directed at SABC. The delayed match will be shown on SABC 3 on Saturday at 19:00.

Should SABC even bother showing the match?

The Springboks have some big calls to make ahead of their Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry (RGR) Test series opener against the All Blacks at Ellis Park on Saturday, with the flyhalf role especially in the spotlight.

It will all likely come down to the way the Boks want to play that decides who they pick to run the show at 10, as they have three world class options in Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Manie Libbok and Handre Pollard.

Over the past year Feinberg-Mngomezulu has emerged as the preferred pick of Bok coach Rassie Erasmus, but Libbok and Pollard are still very attractive options for various reasons.

If the match were to come down to a grind, and the Boks need a calm composed head who is deadeye off the tee, Pollard is still the go-to man when things become an arm wrestle.

But if the Boks want to play a more attack-minded game, clearly Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Libbok are the players you would look to pick.

Although not eager to reveal his hand before the Springbok team announcement on Thursday, coach Rassie Erasmus admitted on Monday that two of the three flyhalves would be in the match day 23 this weekend, and that he expected all three to play by the end of the series.

“We are going to pick two for this weekend. For a series this long against New Zealand, by the time these four weeks are finished, ending in Baltimore, I am pretty sure all three will play,” said Erasmus.

But who are the two that will be picked and who will be left out?

Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Pollard, due to their utility value, are the likely contenders, as Erasmus will definitely want a player who can feature in multiple positions on the bench.

He could, however, start with Libbok, and wing Cheslin Kolbe could take the kicking duties, which would then see the other two battling it out for the bench role.

Libbok has played in both of the Boks’ two biggest ever wins over the All Blacks, coming off the bench in their 43-10 win in Wellington last year and starting in their 35-7 win at Twickenham in 2023.

With Feinberg-Mngomezulu able to cover flyhalf, fullback and centre, he would then likely edge the battle for the back-up spot ahead of Pollard, who can also play centre, which would allow the Boks to add a third back replacement, probably Andre Esterhuizen as a hybrid, to the bench.

Erasmus is expected to name his matchday-23 on Thursday.
