Quan: Handré made me feel comfortable
Springbok utility back Quan Horn has revealed he was pre-warned that he might be needed at flyhalf against Scotland, writes CLINTON VAN DER BERG.
He was nevertheless caught in what he called “the cauldron” of taking over the No 10 jersey mid-match.
“We chatted during the week about which duties I needed to cover, and I was ready for the call,” Horn said. “I was just grateful once again for the opportunity to represent the Springboks.”
Asked what the coaching staff want to see as he develops into a long-term utility option, Horn pointed to versatility as the priority.
“If I can cover flyhalf and fullback for the Springboks, I think that’s good for the team,” he said, adding that being able to cover multiple positions is increasingly valued at Test level.
Horn credited veteran playmaker Handré Pollard with easing his transition onto the field.
“He made me feel very comfortable,” Horn said. “He made everything so easy in the first half, and then I could step up and do my best.”

Horn said Pollard talked him through the attacking options available before kick-off, adding that his composure “gives a lot of confidence on the field”.
With Damian Willemse and Pollard both effectively playmakers alongside him, Horn dismissed suggestions that South Africa risked having “too many cooks” in the backline.
“There’s a big respect between the players,” he said. “Each of them knows the job they need to do first, and if you’re on the front foot, everyone can express themselves.”
Horn also confirmed he had no advance guarantee of finishing the match at flyhalf once the incumbent No 10 was fit to return.
“There were plans during the week in case a player got injured,” he said. “I was prepared to cover the position I was meant to cover.”

He called being kept on for the remainder of the game “a massive confidence booster”.
The performance adds further weight to South Africa’s growing reputation for selection depth, with Horn the latest bench option to deliver under pressure in a genuine Test-match crisis.

Bafana’s Adams honoured ahead of England v Norway
The world of football held a moment of silence for Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams ahead of the 2026 Fifa World Cup quarterfinal match between England and Norway at the Miami Stadium on Saturday.
A moment of silence for Adams
A picture of Adams was displayed on the big screen at the stadium as an impeccable silence was observed in a packed 65 000-or-so seater stadium.
News of Adams’ death broke on Saturday, and sent shockwaves through the South African football community.
Adams was a member of Bafana’s squad at the 2026 Fifa World Cup, as the side reached the knockout stages of a World Cup finals for the first time.
He featured in all three of Bafana’s Group A matches, missing the 1-0 loss to Canada in the last 32.
Fifa president Gianni Infantino had earlier on Saturday paid tribute to Adams on his Instagram.
Infantino – ‘Incredibly sad to hear’
“It is so incredibly sad to hear that South African midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after featuring in his nation’s historic Fifa World Cup campaign,” wrote Infantino.
“My thoughts, condolences, as well as those of everyone at FIFA and the global football community, are with his family, friends and teammates. The Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star will be sorely missed. May he rest in peace.”
Rassie got the win and answers
Rassie Erasmus emerged from the Springboks’ victory over Scotland with exactly what he wanted, writes MARK KEOHANE.
Writing for the Sunday Times, Keohane dismissed the post-match reaction on social media and TV, arguing the focus on Scotland’s effort and claims that South Africa were below their best overlooked the quality of the Boks’ performance.
“If Scotland were that good and South Africa that fortunate, the scoreline would be 42-28 the other way. It takes a very good team to put 42 points past Scotland.”
Keohane points to the Springboks’ remarkable efficiency, scoring six tries from six entries into Scotland’s 22 after converting seven tries from 11 visits against England a week earlier. He believes that level of ruthlessness, rather than any perceived shortcomings, will most please Erasmus.
Keohane also highlights the bigger picture. Erasmus made 13 changes to the match 23, continued to test new combinations and gave more players an opportunity to prove themselves in a Test environment, all while maintaining a winning habit.
“He has picked so many different combinations, entrusted so many youngsters, and scored 14 tries and 87 points in the process.”

For Keohane, the individual performances of Ben-Jason Dixon, Zach Porthen, Paul de Villiers, Evan Roos and Cobus Wiese gave Erasmus further confidence in his squad depth, while established stars such as Handré Pollard, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Damian Willemse and Jesse Kriel reinforced why the Springboks remain the benchmark in world rugby.
