URC finals flashback: Munster triumph in Cape mud

Munster stunned the Stormers 19-14 at Cape Town Stadium in the 2022-23 Vodacom URC final to end a 12-year wait for silverware.

The defending champions had finished third on the log before beating the Bulls 33-21 and Connacht 43-25 in Cape Town. Fifth-placed Munster were forced to do it the hard way, winning playoff matches on the road against Glasgow (14-5) and Leinster (16-15).

Ahead of the final, much of the focus was on the poor condition of the Cape Town Stadium pitch, which had deteriorated further after heavy rain.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: Why URC is breaking tradition for final

The Stormers made the perfect start when flyhalf Manie Libbok intercepted a pass and raced 60m for the opening try.

However, Munster – with Springbok RG Snyman in the second row – gradually took control through a superb tactical kicking game orchestrated by veteran scrumhalf Conor Murray.

No 8 Evan Roos’ yellow card increased the pressure on the hosts and, after several missed opportunities, Munster struck before half-time when flyhalf Jack Crowley’s cross-field kick sent winger Calvin Nash over to give the visitors a 12-7 lead.

URC FINALS FLASHBACK: Stormers make history

The Stormers hit back early in the second half, with flank Deon Fourie scoring from a driving maul to put the hosts ahead. But despite enjoying most of the territory and possession, they could not turn pressure into points.

Munster made their chance count when flank John Hodnett crossed in the 74th minute, sealing victory in front of a record URC crowd of 56,334.

“The field was a nightmare for us,” Stormers coach John Dobson bemoaned afterwards. “It may have been naive of us not to change our game model on that pitch in June .”

D-Mac fired up for milestone Saders clash

Damian McKenzie says the Chiefs are ready to “rip in” as they prepare for a Super Rugby Pacific semi-final against the Crusaders in Hamilton on Friday.

The All Blacks playmaker is set to make his 150th Super Rugby appearance as the Chiefs chase a place in next week’s final.

Standing in their way are the defending champions, who arrive with a formidable playoff record. The Crusaders have won seven consecutive semi-finals and are unbeaten in their last three meetings with the Chiefs, including a 43-33 victory in Hamilton earlier this season.

McKenzie acknowledged the size of the challenge but believes the Chiefs have earned the right to be in this position.

“We have been working really hard throughout the year to put ourselves into playoff contention and to play my 150th against the Crusaders in the semi-final is special,” he said.

“We are extremely excited for this match and ready to rip in. We know what to expect and we know what we need to do to win.

“In playoff rugby there are small margins and small moments you have to nail.

“We know if we stay with what is true to us, it will put us in a good position.”

Chiefs captain Luke Jacobson will lead a largely unchanged side, although injuries have forced two adjustments.

With No 8 Wallace Sititi unavailable and centre Kyle Brown sidelined by concussion, Lalakai Foketi starts in midfield while Samipeni Finau comes into the loose trio. Simon Parker shifts to No 8.

The Crusaders, meanwhile, have been boosted by the return of All Blacks prop Fletcher Newell.

The experienced heavy comes straight back into the starting lineup alongside Codie Taylor and Finlay Brewis after recovering from injury.

The second semi-final sees the Hurricanes host the Blues in Wellington on Saturday.
