Foot: l'Algérie prolonge Vladimir Petkovic au poste de sélectionneur juste avant le Mondial
L'entraîneur suisse Vladimir Petkovic, en poste depuis 2024, a été prolongé comme sélectionneur de l'Algérie, son contrat courant désormais jusqu'à juillet 2028, a annoncé dimanche 7 juin la Fédération algérienne (FAF), quelques jours avant le début du Mondial 2026. Âgé de 62 ans, Petkovic a pris la suite de Djamel Belmadi peu après la CAN disputée en Côte d'Ivoire début 2024, lors de laquelle les Fennecs ont été éliminés au premier tour. Le technicien d'origine bosnienne était libre depuis son limogeage par Bordeaux en février 2022, après un début de saison calamiteux à l'issue de laquelle l'équipe girondine avait été reléguée en Ligue 2. Avant cela, il avait longuement dirigé la sélection suisse de 2014 à 2021, après avoir remporté une Coupe d'Italie avec l'AS Rome en 2013. Qualifiés pour la Coupe du monde en Amérique du Nord (11 juin-19 juillet), les Fennecs affronteront l'Argentine, la Jordanie et l'Autriche au sein du groupe J.

The Blitzboks star edged out Fiji’s Vuiviwa Naduvalo and Australia’s Henry Hutchison for the award. He scored 124 points (16 tries and 22 conversions) in nine events this season, which was the second highest in the squad.
The other South Africans to win the prestigious award are Cecil Afrika (2011), Werner Kok (2015) and Seabelo Senatla (2016).
Leyds and teammate Shilton van Wyk, who topped the points and try-scoring stakes with 160 points and 32 tries, were both named in the Dream Team of the Year.
“Tristan gave us many reasons to smile during the 2026 season and all of us involved in South African rugby are very proud of this humble and hard-working young man,” said SA Rugby president Mark Alexander.
“His ability to ignite the rest of the squad was something to behold, but rugby is a team sport and I’m sure Tristan will be the first to give credit to his teammates – the Blitzboks had a great season and we can’t wait for the next series to start, with our SVNS Cape Town one of the first stops in the new season.
“Equally so for Shilton, who was deservedly included in the SVNS Dream Team. He has been so instrumental for the Blitzboks on attack and defence, but his ability to score crucial tries in finals was so often the game breaker for the side. He was the leading try scorer for the team this season and being included in the Dream Team is just reward.”

Shujaa kiss goodbye to Division 1 dream after Americans pull miraculous win over Fiji
NAIROBI, Kenya, June 7, 2026 – Shujaa’s hopes of returning to Division 1 of the World Rugby Series billowed in smoke after the United States pulled off a miraculous 17-14 win over Fiji in Bordeaux on Sunday evening.
The national team had earlier outshone Uruguay 26-7 in the 11th place playoff on Sunday afternoon as they wound up their woeful outing on a high.
Pitted against the Americans for the remaining slot in the top tier of the prestigious competition, Shujaa needed for Fiji to do them a huge favour by beating their rivals in the fifth-place playoff final at the Stade de Bordeaux in the French city.
It seemed to be going according to plan as the islanders raced to a 14-0 lead at halftime courtesy of Viwa Naduvalo’s brace of tries.
However, the Americans pulled off a great escape in the second half, scoring three tries in the last three minutes.
David Still pulled one back in the 12th minute, before Will Chavalier added a second in the 13th minute — Steve Tomasin adding the extras.
Lucas Lacamp then added to the Americans’ glory with the winner in the 15th minute.
Shujaa will now have to bide their time once again in Division 2 as they plot another shot at Division 1, in the coming season.

Kenyan trio clinch podium places at Stockholm Diamond League
NAIROBI, Kenya, June 7, 2026 – Kenya’s Edmund Serem clinched second place in the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the fifth leg of the Diamond League in Stockholm on Sunday night.
The world bronze medalist clocked 8:12.27 in a race won by Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco, who timed 8:10,40 for the victory.
Another Kenyan, Commonwealth Games champion Abraham Kibiwot, took third place after running 8:12.75.
At the same time, the 2019 World champion, cruised to his first podium place in this year’s Diamond League, clocking a season’s best of 3:30.67 in the men’s 1500m.
Olympic bronze medalist Yared Nuguse of the United States crossed the finish line — also in a season’s best — of 3:30.11 to clinch top spot.
Cameron Myers of Australia clocked 3:30.32 to take second place.
Serem, Kibiwot and Cheruiyot were the only Kenyans in action on the night in a leg that was majorly dominated by European athletes.
Attention shifts to the sixth leg of the one-day meet in Oslo, Norway on Wednesday evening where more Kenyans will be eyeing glory.
