Suryakumar’s indifferent form since the T20 World Cup appears to have ended his stint as captain. On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer’s purple patch with the bat and his impressive captaincy record over the past two years — leading Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and Punjab Kings to the final in 2025 — made the selectors’ decision easier.

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar, after announcing the squads in Mumbai, said, “With regards to Shreyas, we have seen what he has done over the last few years, leading different franchises. He won the title once, and then handled a tougher season this year after a great start. We have seen everything that a captain possibly can. His own performances have been really good.”

Attacking middle-order batter Tilak Varma has been named vice-captain, while Lucknow Super Giants pacer Prince Yadav has also been selected for the Ireland and England series.

Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will miss the T20I series but is expected to return for the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. The team management is keen to manage his workload and keep him fit for the Test and ODI formats.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya, who is part of India’s ODI squad for the Afghanistan series later this month, has been left out of the T20 squads, while Harshit Rana returns to the set-up after recovering from injury.

Rising through Mumbai cricket is never easy, and neither is leading a team from the front but judging by Shreyas Iyer’s impressive captaincy record in the IPL in recent years, Rohit Sharma believes the Mumbai batter is well-equipped to thrive in the role.

Shreyas was heralded as the new Indian captain in the shortest format while Suryakumar Yadav was dropped from the team as the three-time World Cup winners pressed reset to their T20 leadership, with key assignments such as this year’s Asia Cup and the 2028 Olympics and T20 World Cup in mind.

Rohit said Shreyas’ performances as captain in IPL — where he won the 2024 with Kolkata Knight Riders and led Punjab Kings to final in 2025 — will give him the requisite experience for the Indian captaincy role.

“I’m sure looking at how he has captained in the last few years for his franchise, he’s going to have a good time," Rohit, the brand ambassador of the T20 Mumbai League, said here on Saturday.

Rohit, who captained India to their second T20 World Cup win in 2024, said nothing comes easy for a Mumbai cricketer but Shreyas would know captaincy is a title that one has to earn.

“Look, playing in Mumbai, representing Mumbai teaches you a lot of things. If you ask anyone who has captained India or Mumbai before us, they’ll tell you the same thing. Nothing comes easy here. I’m pretty sure it’s the same elsewhere as well. But here – I’m just talking about Mumbai – nothing comes easy."

“You have to really earn it so captaincy is also something that you have to earn and earn the respect of people around you and that is something that all these guys have it," he said.

Rohit also heaped praise on Suryakumar’s stint as India captain which culminated with the national side clinching their record-extending third T20 World Cup title earlier this year.

“I’m pretty sure nothing has come easy, especially for Surya," Rohit said.

“He made his India debut at 30 or 31, if I’m not wrong, which means that he never gave up. He always wanted to be in the fight and when it came, he wanted to grab it with both hands, and he did it," he added.

Suryakumar, who captained the Triumph Knights Mumbai North East in their contest against Sobo Mumbai Falcons, said he was happy knowing another Mumbai player has taken over the reins of the national T20I team.

“So many things are happening but very, very happy for Shreyas as he is getting to lead the T20 Indian team," Suryakumar said at the toss.

“We have played a lot of cricket together here in Bombay and most important thing what I felt is that three back-to-back Mumbai captains (are) going on to lead in T20Is for India. I think it is a very proud moment and everyone needs to celebrate that," he added.

Rohit said the talent in the fourth edition of the T20 Mumbai League, which is running concurrently with the inaugural three-team women’s edition, has “unreal" talent.

“Looking at what has happened and what has transpired, I’m not at all surprised by it. Because the talent that we get to see is unreal, and that is what we want, right?," he said.

“We want the platform for all the players to come out and show their talent and this is the perfect platform for a lot of these guys who are playing and taking part in it," Rohit added.

Why did Suryakumar Yadav not retire? This is something doing the rounds on social media. A fair question to ask if you aren’t Surya. And if you are, a question completely out of bounds. It is his career and his decision. It is his self-belief and entirely his call. Surya must have believed he had the game. In fact, he still has the game. He was available, but the lack of runs forced the selectors to look beyond him. It is all very fair.

The selectors had given him a long rope and he wanted to play on. Now, it was the selectors’ call and they have taken it. To expect Surya to retire is unfair and unreasonable. At no point did he believe that the game had gone away from him. For some of us who have seen him at his best just a few months ago, it is hard to believe he wasn’t able to score runs. But that’s sport and that’s why it is real, not reel, and cruel at times.

Surya will always remain a very interesting case study. Anyone who has followed his career closely will say that he got his opportunity late. For at least a couple of seasons, he scored loads of runs in domestic cricket but was denied a national call-up. He barged open the door and, once he did, there was no looking back. He got better as a T20 player and, over a period, dominated the game, playing key knocks for India in different parts of the world. Leadership too did not come easy to him. Many believed it should have been Hardik Pandya who succeeded Rohit Sharma. But with injuries and all, the selectors believed it ought to be Surya.

As captain, Surya literally won what there was to win. He won multiple bilateral series, the Asia Cup and also the World Cup. He won close to 85 per cent of the matches he led India as captain. And yet, he had to give way as captain and player. That is why cricket is regarded as the most individual of all team games and, unless you score runs as a batter or pick up wickets as a bowler, nothing can guarantee you a place in the team.

Was it the pressures of captaincy that got to Surya? Was he unable to manage both? Was it that the batter in Surya was sacrificed at the altar of captaincy? While we will never have definitive answers to some of these questions, suffice it to say that here was someone who waited for his turn and then forced open the door to the national team. Thereafter, he did all he could and was eventually the captain who led India to a home World Cup trophy.

As the limelight shifts to Shreyas Iyer and Surya is left alone and overlooked, no one can take his achievements away from him. He will forever be the first captain to have won a home T20 World Cup and one who led India to three wins against Pakistan in two weeks at the Asia Cup. As he is left to recalibrate, one has to say it has been a very good innings.
