Thailand edge Hong Kong, China by 6 runs in Women’s T20 Asia Cup opener

Dubai [UAE], August 29 (ANI): Thailand Women held their nerve to secure a six-run victory over Hong Kong, China Women in a low-scoring opening match of the Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2026 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai on Friday.

After winning the toss, Hong Kong, China opted to bowl first and made early inroads into the Thailand batting line-up by removing Aphisara Suwanchonrathi (11) and Phannita Maya (19). Thailand captain Naruemol Chaiwai, however, played a crucial knock of 43 off 31 balls, hitting four boundaries and two sixes. biznow.biz

Nannapat Koncharoenkai supported her with a patient 27 off 41 balls as Thailand posted 120/9 in their 20 overs.

Hong Kong, China’s Marina Lamplough was the pick of the bowlers, claiming four wickets for just 11 runs in her four overs. Alison Siu also impressed with three wickets for 37 runs.

Chasing 121, Hong Kong, China struggled to score freely in the early stages. Opener Kary Chan provided some momentum with a quick 28 off 20 deliveries and no. 3 Yasmin Daswani also helped the team with 28 off 41 balls.

Hong Kong, China remained in the contest heading into the final overs, but Thailand’s bowlers produced a disciplined performance to close out the game. Off-spinner Onnicha Kamchomphu claimed 3/27, while Phannita Maya took 2/22 as Thailand restricted Hong Kong, China to 114/7 in 20 overs.

Despite the late efforts from Chan and the Hong Kong lower order, Thailand managed to defend their modest total and begin their Asia Cup campaign with a win.

Chaiwai was named Player of the Match for her important innings, which helped Thailand post a competitive total on a challenging surface.

Brief Scores: Thailand Women 120/9 in 20 overs (Naruemol Chaiwai 43, Nannapat Koncharoenkai 27; Marina Lamplough 4/11, Alison Siu 3/37) beat Hong Kong, China Women 114/7 in 20 overs (Yasmin Daswani 28, Kary Chan 28; Onnicha Kamchomphu 3/27, Phannita Maya 2/22) by 6 runs. (ANI)

Sulaiman and Kasim Khan, the sons of former Pakistani Prime Minister and cricket icon Imran Khan, have voiced deep fears regarding their father's safety while in custody, claiming that transparent attempts are underway to endanger his life behind bars.

The brothers shared their concerns during an 18-minute interview on Sky Sports hosted by former England captain Mike Atherton, who was among 21 international cricket figures who recently wrote to the Pakistani government requesting adequate medical care for the 73-year-old.

Expressing anxiety over their father's isolation and poor health condition, Kasim highlighted how restricted his access has become.

"It's very, very clear what they're doing, which is they're just blatantly trying to kill him in there. They just want to keep him in there as long as possible and hopefully just silence him," said Kasim, voicing concerns about the current state of his 73-year-old father.

"The last time he was able to speak to our aunties and anyone else, he said the conditions have severely worsened recently. He has been relating it to other political prisoners who have been killed or who have died in prison.

"Right now, it is worse than ever, completely isolating him for more than 23 hours a day in a cell," he added.

Imran Khan's sons call for better medical access

Despite a recent medical check-up ordered by Pakistan's Supreme Court, where Imran Khan was temporarily transferred to Shifa Hospital in Islamabad before being quickly returned to Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail, his sons argued that medical experts have been systematically excluded.

"...it just makes us think, what are they hiding? Why are they so fearful of allowing him to get reported on by an unbiased, neutral doctor?" Sulaiman said.

"We were cautiously optimistic (when court ordered medical check-up). Our fears were confirmed when, instead of being taken to the private hospital, where he was meant to be taken, he was just taken to a government medical facility for a few hours, and then taken straight back to jail," he alleged.

The brothers, who haven't seen their father in person since he survived an assassination attempt in 2022 and last spoke with him via phone in March, added that administrative hurdles and safety concerns continue to prevent them from visiting him in Rawalpindi.

Tonight was a bit drier. Lines and lengths were better. As a collective group, we applied pressure from both ends. It’s based on the way the game is going. The lineup we have, we have to try to win the powerplay. It’s to lengthen the batting.

The opportunity came and I grabbed it with both hands. It’s a god-given talent I have and I’m trying to make the most of it. It’s good – nice of the Queen’s Park Cricket Club to give us that for our achievement.
