India’s junior athletes started their campaign at the World Athletics U20 Championships 2026 on a promising note with three final qualifications and a spot in the track semifinals at Hayward Field.
Javelin thrower Ashish Yadav topped Group A with a throw of 69.87m and secured 2nd place among 26 throwers overall. Dharanidharan hurled a 68.07m mark, finishing 12th overall. Both Indians advanced to the men’s javelin throw final. South Africa’s Jan-Hendrik Heymans was the sole athlete across both groups to breach the automatic qualification standard of 72.50m and dominated the qualification with a 76.02m effort.
In the women’s discus throw, U20 Asian champion, Amanat Kamboj registered a season’s best mark of 52.58m. Finishing 6th in Group A and 12th overall, she earned the final qualifying spot for the medal event led by China’s Yixin Su (58.06m) and Chenyi Ma (57.72m).
Middle distance runner Mogali Venkatram advanced to the men’s 800m semifinals after finishing third in his heat in 1:52.81. Compatriot Uwin Anand narrowly missed out, despite clocking a faster 1:52.37, as his 7th place finish in Heat 1 left him outside the qualification places. Uganda’s Shafeck Murungi topped the qualifying field with a personal best of 1:46.64. The top five finishers in each heat, along with the two fastest losers, progressed to the semifinals.
India’s 4x400m mixed relay team missed out on a place in the final after finishing fourth in Heat 1 as the quartet of Piyush Raj, Tahura Khatun, Sayed Sabeer and Thiya Arumugam fell short, clocking a season best effort of 3:22.85s. The top three teams from each heat progressed automatically. Great Britain (3:21.27s), Poland (3:21.47s) and Czechia (3:21.58s) secured the qualifying spots from Heat 1.
USA’s quartet registered a World U20 lead, clocking an impressive 3:18.26 to top the chart overall.
