Early run helps Riverheads advance in Region 1B girls playoffs

Riverheads beat Brunswick 57-20 in the Region 1B girls basketball quarterfinals Friday, Feb. 20. The Gladiators had a 21-0 run in the first quarter and never looked back in advancing in the playoffs.

"We had a strong defensive presence in the first quarter," Riverheads coach Katelyn Clark said. "The girls came out with a lot of intensity, which set the tone for the game."

No. 2 Riverheads (16-7) moves on to the Region 1B semifinals this Tuesday, Feb. 24, where it will host No. 3 Luray, a 55-19 winner over No. 6 Cumberland.

Riverheads has now won six of its last seven games.

Kallie Poole, the lone senior on a young Riverheads team, had 16 points to lead the team in scoring. She knocked down four 3-pointers in the win.

Freshman Chesney Dunlap added 12 points and freshman Avery Glover had 11 in the win.

The other two Region 1B girls quarterfinal games saw No. 1 Surry County beat No. 8 ARGS 53-21 and No. 5 Rappahannock beat No. 4 Williams Campbell 60-51.
