Die Roten Rampant: Bayern Munich’s astonishing goal-scoring campaign

Bayern Munich’s attacking output this season has been nothing short of astronomical. Led by Harry Kane, Luis Díaz, Michael Olise, and now Jamal Musiala, the Bavarians boast as terrifying an attacking arsenal as could possibly be dreamed up. Including the Club World Cup, Bayern has already amassed 134 goals in all competitions — and more could be coming today vs. Eintracht Frankfurt.

It is not only domestic records that the Rekordmeister is taking aim at. A long-standing European record could fall, too. Via Goal.com:

3.73 goals PER GAME! 🤯

Bayern Munich have already scored 82 times in 22 Bundesliga games and could end the season on 127 goals, meaning they will break the all-time record set by Torino in 1948 (125 goals in 40 games) ⚽️

It’s no mere stroke of fortune that Bayern is scoring this much, either. At least not entirely. The xG tells the tale — from WhoScored, as captured by @iMiaSanMia:

Bayern Munich have created the highest xG (66.45) of any side in Europe’s top five leagues this season. 🎯 🔥

However…there is a caveat. You see, the above statistic was noted on February 16, prior to Barcelona’s match that that day. The Catalans under Hansi Flick have since surpassed the Bavarians (whom, it need not be said, Flick used to coach), edging them out just barely to land at 66.51 xG.

It was a game in which Barça registered 23 shots…but only four on goal…and lost 2-1.

Indeed, Barça is considerably underperforming xG in LaLiga this season while Bayern also leads the way in xG overperformance. Is that strictly down to luck or quality of finishing? Likely the latter — though interestingly, WhoScored’s top three xG over-performers are all Bundesliga sides with Bayern at +12.55, Eintracht Frankfurt at +11.4, and Borussia Dortmund at +5.68. The next-best team, Marseille, is at +3.96 and the only other team above +3 is TSG Hoffenheim.

What does this all mean? Enjoy the goals. Plenty more are coming.
