Quarterback is a fringe need for the Los Angeles Rams this offseason after Matthew Stafford announced his return for an 18th season. Had he retired, the Rams would've been much more desperate for a quarterback, likely either trading a first-round pick for a proven player or using one on a rookie.
With Stafford back, they can be patient at the position and wait for the right prospect to come along. Will there be one in this year's class?
Here are five quarterbacks for them to watch at the NFL combine on Saturday.
Ty Simpson, Alabama
Simpson could be a Round 1 target for the Rams if they want to take a chance on the Alabama quarterback. He looked like a top-five pick in the first half of last season but struggles in the second half caused his stock to plummet. While he's still likely to be taken in the first round, he's no longer a lock to go in the top 32.
What makes him enticing is the way he throws with anticipation (and usually, accurately) over the middle, which is an area of the field the Rams often attack. Though he's not considered a scrambler, he's athletic enough to make plays with his legs.
Drew Allar, Penn State
Allar probably would've been a first-round pick had he entered the draft last year instead of returning to school, and now it's hard to gauge where he'll be picked now. He's fairly mobile and has plenty of arm strength, showing at Penn State in 2024 that he can make every throw needed. Unfortunately, he returned to school and played just six games before getting hurt, showing concerning signs of regression as a passer, too.
Sawyer Robertson, Baylor
Robertson is another semi-mobile quarterback who can extend plays but won't consistently take off and run with success. He threw for 3,681 yards and 31 touchdowns with 12 interceptions at Baylor last season, though he only completed 60% of his throws.
He's not the biggest prospect and doesn't come with prototypical size, but at 6-3, he's big enough to succeed in the NFL. He just needs to work on his accuracy and anticipation.
Carson Beck, Miami
Beck is the most experienced quarterback in this class, and maybe that appeals to the Rams. He's a big fan of Stafford, too, saying he's the quarterback he watches the most of. Beck didn't use his legs often in college but he's mobile enough to extend plays and escape the pocket when necessary.
His accuracy needs work and he doesn't throw with good anticipation, but those are things he can improve on in the NFL with time and development.
Garrett Nussmeier, LSU
Like Allar, Nussmeier's stock took a major hit in 2025. He struggled badly in an injury-plagued season and some of his flaws became apparent. It also doesn't help that he's only 6-foot-1, making him one of the smaller quarterbacks in the class with limited mobility.
In nine games last season, he threw just 12 touchdown passes and five interceptions after tallying 29 touchdown passes in 2024.
