Der Klassiker: Dortmund’s title hopes crash and burn as Kane spearheads Bayern victory

Bayern Munich tamed Borussia Dortmund’s fire to claim a 3-2 win and move 11 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table following yesterday’s Der Klassiker.

The Bavarians have claimed 34 Bundesliga titles, and all signs point to a 35th following a hard-fought win at the Signal Iduna Park.

Nico Schlotterbeck powered in a cross from a free-kick to put Dortmund ahead, but the hosts had their backs against the wall from that point.

Bayern probed, but didn’t equalise until the second half. Fine interplay between Josip Stanisic, Joshua Kimmich and Serge Gnabry set up Harry Kane to make it 1-1.

Schlotterbeck then conceded a soft penalty that Kane converted to make it 2-1 and take his Bundesliga tally to 30 for the season.

Dortmund equalised through Daniel Svensson, but Kimmich dashed their hopes when he arrived late in the box to crash the ball in and earn his side the win.

Bayern manager Vincent Kompany praised the match as a great advertisement for the league, and rightly so. The second half was one for the books.

He said (via Bulinews): “From my perspective, I always greet the fans and then move on – today I stayed and stood longer to see the players with the fans and soak in the moment. That was beautiful.

“I think today was a great advertisement for the Bundesliga – intensity, high tempo, beautiful goals.”

Borussia Dortmund manager Niko Kovac echoed those sentiments. “We showed a good reaction after the Atalanta game,” he said. “We gave a lot, and it was a great back-and-forth.

“It was advertising for the Bundesliga – unfortunately, with the bad ending for us.”
