One of golf’s major tournaments is coming to Ohio course

TOLEDO, Ohio — The U.S. Open, one of professional golf’s four major tournaments, will be played at Inverness Club in Toledo in 2045.

The United States Golf Association announced the decision Saturday in a post on social media. The course also will host the 2033 U.S. Girls Junior and the 2036 U.S. Women’s amateur, the USGA announced.

Inverness, which is a private club, last hosted a major tournament in 1993, the PGA Championship.

Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz hailed the announcement as “one of the biggest wins” for the city in years.

“It’s almost impossible for me to describe how big of a deal this is for Toledo,” Kapszukiewicz said in a post on social media. “This is the biggest championship in the sport of golf. It is the Super Bowl of golf, the Stanley Cup of golf, the World Series of golf.”

The event will have a significant economic impact on the city. According to Kapszukiewicz, last year’s U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club outside of Pittsburgh generated $288.8 million. He said $200 million directly benefited Allegheny County, where Pittsburgh is located.

“But from my perspective, I am most excited about what this says about Toledo,” the mayor said. “For years the perception has been that while Inverness is a course more than worthy of hosting a U.S. Open, the Toledo market wasn’t strong or dynamic enough to earn the honor. Today’s announcement dispels that myth once and for all. ...

“This distinction is important for how the rest of the world thinks about Toledo, but it’s just as important for how we think about ourselves.”

Inverness also will host the 2027 Women’s Open and 2029 U.S. Amateur, The Blade reports.

The club opened in 1903 and has hosted four previous U.S. Opens, the most recent in 1979, as well as two PGA Championships. The course was designed by the famed Donald Ross.
