It is safe to say that Hans Cornelis was not happy with the officiating during his sides late defeat to Club Brugge. Joel Ordonez struck in the 100th minute of the game, despite only eight minutes of added time being added. Speaking to the press afterwards, many of the Charleroi players and their head coach were furious with the referee.
As reported by HLN, Cornelis said ‘I’m not usually one to say much, but now I’m really angry. I understand the red card for Van Den Kerkhof , but the penalty we conceded was far too light. Before Club’s second goal, Patrick Pflücke was also fouled, but no action was taken’.
Just a few weeks ago, things were really looking up for Charleroi. The side had started really well under Cornelis and looked set for a top six finish and a potential trip to the cup final. However, things have gone south in recent weeks, with a number of defeats and dropped points seeing them fall away from the top six and drop out of the cup.
For Club Brugge, this was a huge result. Turning things around so late on means they were able to take advantage of Union St Gilloise being unable to beat 10 man Westerlo and Sint Truiden losing away to Antwerp. Club Brugge are now just a point behind Union with a few games left in the regular season.
