Buckeyes take series opener convincingly over Bemidji State
Feb. 20—BEMIDJI — Kaia Malachino stole the show on Friday night at the Sanford Center against the Bemidji State women's hockey team.
The Ohio State junior forward and Colgate transfer scored three goals to lead the second-ranked Buckeyes past the Beavers by a score of 7-1. Malachino scored once in each of the first two periods before she finished off the hat trick with 47 seconds left in the third. Two of her goals came on the power play.
Sloane Matthews had two goals, while Emma Peschel and Jocelyn Amos each had one for OSU.
Hailey Armstrong scored the loan goal for BSU (6-24-3, 3-23-3 WCHA). Armstrong's team-high 14th goal came on the power play in the second period, with assists from Carmen Bray and Morgan Smith. Smith, a sophomore, leads the Beavers in points with 25 (12 goals, 13 assists).
Kaitlin Groess made 38 saves in goal for Bemidji State. Hailey MacLeod stopped 20 shots for Ohio State (29-4-0, 23-4-0 WCHA).
