The Spartans showed fight early behind Colby Garland's 28 points and Melvin Bell Jr.'s 12 first-half points, shooting 52% in the first half and briefly taking a lead. However, Colorado State's Brandon Rechsteiner's 15 first-half points on five three-pointers and the Rams' overall 62% shooting from the field proved too much for San Jose State.
Despite the Spartans' spirited effort and defensive energy, Colorado State's offensive precision wore down San Jose State in the second half. The Rams finished shooting 53% from three-point range, leaving the Spartans constantly scrambling on defense as they couldn't sustain enough stops to keep pace with the hot-shooting Rams.
