Lou Holtz: Football Legend with Golf Passion

Football coaching legend Lou Holtz, who passed away at age 89, was equally passionate about golf, becoming a single-digit handicapper and winning the member-member at Augusta National.

Holtz, best known for his successful football coaching career at schools including Notre Dame and South Carolina, maintained a deep connection to golf throughout his life. He hosted a SiriusXM radio show called 'Holtz in One' and was a member at prestigious clubs including Lake Nona Golf & Country Club and Augusta National, where he considered his 2005 member-member victory his greatest accomplishment.

The football coach's golf journey began when William & Mary hired him as assistant football coach in 1962 and also made him golf coach to boost his salary by $300. Despite initially not knowing how to keep score, golf became a guilty pleasure for Holtz, who developed friendships with players like Lee Trevino and famously shared stories about being on the cover of Sports Illustrated when Jack Nicklaus won the 1986 Masters.
